The developer has said it wants to respect the site’s heritage as a live-work destination and create a sustainable residential-led, mixed-use urban neighbourhood.
Most recently home to the Axis Building, and before that, the beating heart of commerce and trade at Birmingham Central Goods Station, the gateway site spans just over 4 acres next to the Mailbox.
The vision will see “Goods Station build on the city’s rich industrial history while embracing its spirit and connectedness, combining a new community and a destination: a dynamic hub where people can live, work, socialise and thrive", says Vita.
With striking new buildings set around enhanced pedestrianised links, Goods Yard will feature a good range of apartment sizes and tenures, further complemented by a green public square at its heart, providing a unique, green space with public art, seating, and retail and commercial spaces.
Amenities will foster a sense of community by encouraging social interaction and wellbeing, from communal spaces and roof terraces to fitness facilities and co-working spaces.
Aligning with Birmingham City Council’s recently launched ‘Our Future City – the Draft Central Birmingham Framework 2040’, the site falls within the Western Gateway, one of three Growth Zones, which states:
"Ambitious proposals will bring together several major redevelopment opportunities to transform under-utilised spaces and buildings; this will deliver high-density residential and commercial development connected by new streets and squares and a reactivated canal frontage between Gas Street Basin and Mailbox."
The first phase of consultations can be viewed here (https://goodsstation.co.uk/get-involved/), lasting until August 8.
